Hemlock Woolly Adelgid: The Hemlock Woolly Adelgid has been discovered in the Adirondacks for the first time. A small infestation was found on two Hemlock trees on forest preserve lands near Prospect Mountain in the Town of Lake George. The Department of Environmental Conservation is asking hikers and campers in the Adirondacks to report any sightings of the white, woolly fuzz the insects leave on the underside of Hemlock branches. Another update on our fight against the invasive Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). Did you know that in addition to our chemical treatments, we have released predatory beetles whose sole purpose in life is to eat away the HWA? We are hopeful that this biological control method will reduce the number of HWA on our properties. The hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is an aphid-like insect that targets Eastern and Carolina hemlock trees. Adelgid infestations are easily recognizable by the appearance of tiny “cotton balls” at the base of hemlock needles. The insect feeds on the sap at the base of hemlock needles, disrupting nutrient flow and causing the needles to fall off. The tree then starves to death, usually within three to five years of the initial attack. Originally discovered in the Smokies in 2002, adelgid

Our state tree, the Eastern hemlock, is under threat by the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid! This greatly affects forest and stream ecosystems. We’re working to control the spread of invasive HWA in select stands of hemlock trees on some of our preserves: Wolf Creek Narrows Natural Area, Marshall Preserve and Bennett Branch Forest. Working closely with the PA Department of Forestry and after careful evaluation and testing, our land staff and our Pennsylvania Natural Heritage Program (PNHP) scien
