The Jacobite forces of Charles Edward Stuart were defeated by loyalist troops commanded by William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland in a battle that more closely resembled a massacre. Following the battle, Jacobite supporters were executed and imprisoned and homes in the Highlands were burned. The actions resulted in the Duke of Cumberland, who led Hanoverian troops at Culloden
