The vast majority were Jews, targeted as part of the Nazi regime’s systematic attempt to annihilate European Jewry. Other victims included Poles, Roma and Sinti, Soviet prisoners of w

On this day in 1945, prisoners from Auschwitz were forced on a death march, as Soviet forces approached the camp. Conditions on the death march were horrible: starving prisoners were forced to keep pace — if they fell behind, they were shot by Nazi guards. In such freezing conditions, many prisoners died of exposure. Bronia Brandman, a member of the Museum’s Speakers Bureau, survived a death march from Auschwitz. Bronia was deported to Auschwitz in August 1943, when she was about 12 years old. S

From 1940 until 1945, the town of Oświęcim in southern Poland was the home of Auschwitz, the biggest, most notorious concentration camp in the Nazi system. Today, Auschwitz is the most poignant memorial anywhere to the victims of the Holocaust. “Auschwitz” (OWSH-vits) actually refers to a series of several camps in German-occupied Poland—most importantly Auschwitz I, in Oświęcim (50 miles west of Kraków), and Auschwitz II—Birkenau (about 1.5 miles west of Oświęcim). Today, the town of Oświęcim is home to a museum and a memorial to the many victims, as well as an international youth centre. Hanna decided to work there. She dreams of a society that accepts and respects everyone, regardless of skin colour, origin, sexuality, gender or religion. And she wants to do her part to achieve this. 81 years ago, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops. The Germans established the Auschwitz camp complex in the spring of 1940 in German-occupied Poland. In just over four years, about 1.1 million people were unalived there-including about one million Jews. Each year on the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, we remember the victims of the Holocaust and carry forward the messages of its survivors. #HolocaustRemembranceDay #InternationalHolocaustRemembranceDay
