Istanbul is one of the safest cities of that population. Hell even cities that has like 1/5 population of Istanbul like Paris or Rome or Barcelona are all less safe then Istanbul. Try walking in La Rambla without someone asking you if you want to have sex or buy cocaine or help a homeless sleeping on the pavement for 5 minutes.

So if you’re taking one continuous trip, but switch between bus and subway or tram, you will pay when you first board AND when you switch, so when planning, look for routes that don’t require switching.
