"You almost never need to use the bottom half, and future games did away with the map with the exception of Mario Kart DS. They could have just made the racing screen bigger; the map really isn't important enough to warrant an entire half of the screen." The bottom half is also a rear view btw, hit X button in 1-Player Mode to see it.
