The Center for the Study of National Reconnaissance supports NRO leadership and the Intelligence Community by offering insights based on history, analytical studies, and outreach programs; and works to advance the public’s understanding of the discipline of national reconnaissance.

The NRO Director (DNRO) reports to the Secretary of Defense and the Director of National Intelligence for all national space and assigned airborne reconnaissance activities.

A member of both the Intelligence Community (IC) and Department of Defense (DoD), the NRO builds and operates Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR) space and ground systems that collect and process signals and imagery to discover and follow activities for a wide range of intelligence, defense, and civil applications, including:

In 2021 the National Reconnaissance Office marked its 60th anniversary. Since its inception on Sept. 6, 1961, the NRO has leveraged its unparalleled intelligence collection capabilities to meet new challenges, and it continues to develop intelligence gathering systems to protect the United States and its citizens.
