New information on the Southport mass shooting was revealed during the suspect's first appearance in court on Monday, Sept. 29.

The man accused in Saturday night’s mass shooting in Southport made his first court appearance Monday afternoon in Brunswick County.

Thomas Jacob Sanford was identified in a Michigan church shooting. Hours earlier, Nigel Max Edge opened fire at a crowded bar in Southport, North Carolina.

Edge was born Sean William Debevoise. He later legally changed his name in 2023. In his name change petition to the court, he wrote: "There have been a lot of events in my life that I don't understand. Therefore, I do not trust my family, and I would feel more comfortable starting my life in a new path with a new name."
