The world has continued its love affair with “face with tears of joy,” a crass, blunt instrument of an emoji. That’s according to data released by the Unicode Consortium.

The “thumbs up” emoji came in second, followed by the “red heart” emoji. Rounding out the Top 5 were the flirtatious “wink and kiss” and “sad face with a tear” emojis.

The Unicode Consortium has published a ranking of the most popular emojis in 2021. The top three are “face with tears of joy”, “red heart” and “rolling on the floor laughing”.
