Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers have already cast their ballots in the first days of early voting in the NYC mayoral election, as the three front-runners show no signs of letting up on their campaigns.
Zohran Mamdani won the New York Democratic primary vote in June with 56.4% of the votes, to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s 43.6%, final ranked-choice tallies showed. Those results offer clues about each candidate’s strengths heading into today’s election.
Speaking to an unruly throng of reporters after voting at the High School of Art and Design on 56th Street in Manhattan just before noon Tuesday, Cuomo tapped into voters’ fears about Zohran
Mamdani co-sponsors the Gender Recognition Act, which would make it easier for trans and nonbinary folks to change their gender on official government documents. It would also give them the option to choose a gender-neutral marker of “X” instead of the male/female binary and options for gender-neutral parent language on birth certificates.
New York City’s mayoral election is seeing historic turnout, with more than 1.4 million votes cast as of 3 p.m.—the highest total in any city mayoral race since 2001. According to the City Board of Elections, 717,000 voters have cast ballots today, bringing the total to 735,000 who have voted early.
