New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency Saturday after several wind-driven brush fires broke out in New York’s Long Island, sending large smoke plumes into the air and shutting down a highway.

Around 1 p.m., multiple wildfires broke out near Westhampton along a New York highway, Southhampton Town Supervisor Maria Moore said in a state of emergency declaration. The fires closed a portion of the Sunrise Highway and a service road, the state Department of Transportation said on social media.
