The governor spoke hours after the alleged shooter, a military veteran who was shot in Iraq, made his first court appearance on murder charges.
Governor Josh Stein traveled to Southport on Monday in the wake of a mass shooting that killed three and injured five. Stein told residents the state shares in their grief, but also took the opportunity to advocate for reforms to the mental healthcare system and suggested the possibility of red flag laws.
The husband of one of the people killed in a shooting in Southport said his wife was devoted to her family and a supportive mother to three children. A man who witnessed the shooting shared how scary it was to go through.
Alongside Stein, law enforcement agencies like the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the U.S Coast Guard, the Oak Island and Southport Police Department all stood in-front of the community.

SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) - Governor Josh Stein will join local law enforcement and other leaders in Southport Monday afternoon. This follows a deadly mass shooting in the town Saturday night. Three people were killed and five others were injured. Police say they detained a suspect 30 minutes after the shooting in Oak Island.
