Hurricane Humberto, which had been racing ahead of Imelda, dissipated Wednesday after passing west of Bermuda on Tuesday. Its remnants were named Storm Amy by U.K. forecasters, who warned it would affect much of Ireland and the U.K. starting Friday.
Imelda’s core passed over Bermuda overnight Wednesday and knocked out power to thousands as hurricane winds ripped across the island. The storm also knocked several homes on North Carolina’s Outer Banks into the sea and continues to churn up dangerous surf,
It’s interesting to see how these two tropical systems in the Atlantic have progressed over the past few days. As of this morning Humberto was basically falling apart and becoming a broad area of low pressure.
A hurricane warning remained in effect for the island, and forecasters warned Imelda could be near Category 2 strength when it nears the island later today. The National Hurricane Center said hurricane-force winds, damaging waves and flash flooding will be possible in Bermuda from Imelda.
Imelda will strike Bermuda with high winds, surge flooding and heavy rain as high surf and rip currents continue along the East Coast. Here's the latest forecast.
