In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks first proposed the idea of expanding the holiday to one honoring veterans of all U.S. wars. In 1954, the holiday legally became known as Veterans Day.

Congressman Greg Stanton responded to X, saying, “Veterans Day isn’t just about military victories. It’s about honoring the courage, sacrifice and service of all who wore the uniform.

Some veterans’ groups pointed to the history of how Veterans Day was expanded to include all veterans to argue that Mr. Trump’s proposal was undermining the spirit of the holiday.

Trump said on social media that he's pushing to rename Veterans Day and to formally recognize May 8 in the United States as a way to acknowledge Americans' efforts in World Wars I and II.
