For the uninitiated, a Sherrin is the oblong-shaped ball that is used in Australian Rules football, named after the company that has made the balls out of kangaroo leather since 1880.

A 62-year-old man jumped from pier into Lake Tabor to retrieve a lost beach ball and drowned while swimming back to shore with it, North Carolina police say.

The ball was at least 200 feet from shore when the man jumped in to get it, witnesses told North Carolina cops.
