Between 2019 and 2024, data shows that emergency responses related to nitrous oxide misuse have surged. Calls to Michigan's poison control center increased 533% over the five-year period.
Deaths in the United States attributed to abuse of nitrous oxide jumped more than 100% between 2019 and 2023; over a five-year period, emergency department visits rose 32%.
That statistic is supported by a 553% increase in emergency medical service calls related to nitrous oxide during the same period. Emergency department visits also increased by 757% from 2019 to 2023.
