Chiefs-49ers: Kansas City leads 28-12 late in fourth quarter
For the second time this season, the (5-0) Kansas City Chiefs are facing a rematch against one of last season’s postseason opponents — in this case, the team they defeated in last February’s Super Bowl LVIII: the (3-3) San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs won the first of these games — a 27-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens, whom they defeated in 2023’s AFC Championship — and will have one more 2023 postseason rematch when they face the Buffalo Bills in Week 11. First quarter The Chiefs won the opening coin toss, choosing to defer their decision to the second half. That gave the 49ers possession to start this game. San Francisco began at the 30-yard line after a touchback. A holding penalty set the 49ers back immediately, wiping out a big run because defensive tackle Mike Pennel was held in pursuit. The Chiefs’ pass defense held tight on second down, then a draw play was stopped by safety Bryan Cook to force a punt. The Chiefs faced third down quickly on the opening possession, but converted easily with a strong route by wide receiver Mecole Hardman to get open towards the sideline. The Chiefs only needed one yard on the next third down that came up, but pressure from 49ers’ defensive end Nick Bosa forced a bad throw. The fourth and short was an opportunity for the Chiefs to try faking a punt, but the run up the middle was stuffed. The 49ers took possession at Kansas City’s 45-yard line. With advantageous field position, the 49ers looked for a big play on first down — but quarterback Brock Purdy’s throw was jumped by safety Justin Reid. The interception gave Kansas City the ball back at their own 42-yard line. Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes came out locked in on the next drive, finding tight end Noah Gray down the sideline for a 26-yard gain on the first play. Then, he hung in the pocket and scrambled to convert a third down. As soon as the Chiefs entered the red zone, things went south: Mahomes was sacked, then a pass was tipped up and intercepted on the next snap. From the 49ers’ 32-yard line, the 49ers got eight yards on first down — then couldn’t move the chains on two consecutive runs after that. Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi stuffed the first run, then defensive end George Karlaftis wrapped up the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage to force fourth down. San Francisco decided to punt. Special Teams Rookie safety Jaden Hicks took a direct snap on a fake-punt attempt in the first quarter, but he was stuffed.
