Now, a new Musk project is on the brink of victory: an election Saturday to officially turn a small patch of coastal South Texas — home to his rocket company SpaceX — into a city known as Starbase.

The city of Starbase would encompass the SpaceX rocket testing and launch complex in South Texas. It could lay the groundwork for similar towns Musk plans to create here in the future.

A new Starbase city would give SpaceX room to expand, but local advocates worry about what it will mean for the surrounding community.
