Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez” is an Oscar contender unlike any other. It’s a musical, a trans parable, and a Mexico-set melodrama.

“Emilia Pérez” won four Golden Globes on Jan. 5, including two best picture awards in the musical/comedy and non-English language categories, which sparked controversy online.

The “Emilia Pérez” star isn’t the first trans Oscar nominee. Anohni was up for best song, and Elliot Page was a contender before coming out publicly as trans.
