An unvaccinated child has died from measles in West Texas, officials said, marking the first fatality from the disease in the U.S. since 2015. The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) confirmed the death on Wednesday but did not disclose the patient's age.

Four of the newly reported cases are located in Dallam County, 200 miles north of Gaines County where the outbreak originated.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott's office has released one of the leader's first responses regarding the measles outbreak occurring in the state. His statement also comes after the Lone Star State reported the first measles death in the U.S. since 2015. The first death was a child who was not vaccinated, according to the Associated Press .
