Three chemical producers have reached a historic settlement with the state of New Jersey over "forever chemicals" and other pollutants released into the environment.

In what officials say is the largest environmental settlement ever won by a state, chemical giants Chemours, DuPont and Corteva agreed on Monday to pay New Jersey $875 million over the next quarter-century to settle claims linked to pollution from so-called “forever chemicals.

DuPont and two other companies will pay New Jersey up to $2 billion to settle environmental claims stemming from PFAS, commonly referred to as “forever chemicals.”

Port Authority officials said they are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out beneath a PATH commuter train in Jersey City, N.J., on Monday morning.
