Storm Éowyn was "probably the strongest storm" to hit the UK in at least 10 years, the Met Office has said, with wind gusts in excess of 100mph (160km/h).

The Met Office has issued fresh yellow weather warnings for snow, ice and strong winds in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland as Storm Eowyn continues to batter Britain.

Travel chaos continued on Saturday morning, with flights, trains and ferries cancelled, after winds reaching 100mph caused widespread disruption and widespread damage to rail networks. At least 1,070 flights were axed and 150,000 air passengers affected.

Flights have been delayed, roads closed and ferry services cancelled as 100mph winds pose a danger to life in parts of the UK on Friday morning. Rail services and flights have been axed, with rare red weather warnings issued for Scotland and Northern Ireland as Storm Eowyn is likely to damage buildings,

With Storm Éowyn battering Britain, several social media users reacted to warnings issued by the Met Office, with comments ranging from fairly sane to absolutely nuts.

The Met Office has warned London could see wind speeds of up to 50mph today caused by Storm Éowyn. European meteorologists have also warned the capital could see ‘tornado-style’ events.
