Doggett has represented his hometown of Austin for over 50 years, in both the Legislature and Congress, surviving numerous Republican redistricting efforts to target his seat.

The 78-year-old Democrat is eschewing a possible member-on-member primary, but did not indicate whether he will retire from Congress.

In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Doggett said he would, "prefer to devote the coming months to fighting Trump tyranny and serving Austin rather than waging a struggle with fellow Democrats.
