A man thought to be a citizen of Bangladesh was arrested in India's financial capital Mumbai on Sunday and is considered the prime suspect in the stabbing of Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan, police said.

Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad's lawyer, Advocate Sandeep Shekhane, has disputed police claims that Shehzad is a Bangladeshi national. Shekhane argued that there is no evidence to support these allegations and emphasized that his client has been living in Mumbai for over seven years.

Mumbai Police has also booked the accused in Saif Ali Khan attack case for allegedly illegally entering India from Bangladesh, police said on Sunday. The police said that he was booked under Section 3(A) and 6(A) of the Indian Entry Prohibition Act,
