Today, sundown towns may not look like they did during the mid-20th century, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. According to NPR, Martinsville, Indiana, has long been labeled a sundown town.

In the last 100 years, nearly a dozen Florida towns carried the label of “sundown towns,” but these two highlight the different paths a town can take.

Historians say sundown towns are cities or towns that intentionally kept people of color, specifically Black Americans, out of their towns after sundown. There are several documented in our region.
