In 1968, Benavidez responded to a distress call for a Special Forces team under attack near Loc Ninh. An essay from the National Medal of Honor Museum reported the soldiers were outnumbered 100 to 1.

The late Army Master Sgt. Roy P. Benavidez was honored Friday, Jan. 3, 2025, at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. He received the Medal of Honor in 1981.
