The E18 succeeds the PS5016- E16 released in late 2019. “AMD leads the industry with the first desktop processor and chipset support for PCIe® 4.0.
Phison's new PS5018-E18 (E18) PCIe 4.0 controller is the industry's fastest PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD solution now, succeeding Phison's previous-gen PS5016-E16 that dropped in late 2019.
The E16 controller launched way back then was capable of 5GB/s read and 4.4GB/s write, which seems a little tame by today's standards, but is still way quicker than even the fastest PCIe 3.0 drives.
The same is not true of PCIe 4.0. Several companies have already announced PCIe 4.0 SSDs, all of which use a Phison PS5016-E16 controller. These new SSDs boast sequential read speeds of around 5GB/s.
KS Pua, Chairman and CEO of Phison, said "Working with AMD has enabled rapid innovation and expansion of the PCIe 4.0 ecosystem. The PS5016-E16 is the world's first Gen4x4 NVMe SSD controller IC.
Phison has been out under the bright lights of Sin City to demonstrate its new PCIe 4.0 SSD controller, the catchily titled PS5016-E16. Trips off the tongue that one, eh?
We saw a number of PCIe 4.0 SSDs enter the market, all of which were using a Phison PS5016-E16 controller, including XPG with its GAMMIX S50.

PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs with speeds of up to 7,000MB/s read/write will arrive in the first half of 2020. As promised, Phison has announced its follow-up to the PS5016-E16 controller, the PS5018-E18 ...
Today’s fastest PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe SSDs can hit about 3.5GB/s (reads) and 2.8GB/s (writes). The first wave of Phison PS5016-E16-based drives ups those numbers significantly, however, and will ...
The limitation, though, appears to be the Psison PS5016-E16 controller, which Psison’s website says will hit 5GBps reads and 4.4GBps writes. It’s probably nothing to be concerned about ...
