The Outer Banks have lost roughly 675 feet of shoreline since 1987, according to AccuWeather. A 2023 study from Dare County found that Rodanthe is losing more than 15 feet of coast per year — far faster than most other U.S. shorelines.

Two more unoccupied homes in the Outer Banks of North Carolina fell into the ocean on Tuesday morning, as erosion continues to eat away at the islands.
