One of the latest wildfires to burn is known as the Pyrite Fire in the Jurupa Valley between Los Angeles and Riverside. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but the blaze did trigger evacuations.

Dry thunderstorms hit California on Tuesday, creating over 10,000 lightning strikes that greatly increased the state's wildfire risk. Dozens of blazes ignited from the storms. In one case, a lightning strike sparked the 6-5 Fire, which r apidly scorched the historic California "Gold Rush" town of Chinese Camp, including burning several homes.

When lightning strikes are abundant, so are wildfires – some in remote places across the state. Scientists warn there may be more in the future.
