Activision pulled the plug on the franchise in 2011. There was an attempt to revive the series in 2015 with Guitar Hero Live, featuring a new guitar design and a live-action concert format.

Guitar Hero Live launched in October 2015. GameSpot's Guitar Hero Live review scored the game a 6/10, with critic Scott Butterworth lamenting its use of microtransactions in particular.
