Officials said the unnamed mountaineer was alone on the Fujinomiya trail on April 22. He had to be rescued again just four days later.

He climbed the Fujinomiya trail again to about 10,000 feet above sea level to retrieve his forgotten cell phone and other items he had left behind, police said.

Authorities in Japan have rescued the same climber from the slopes of Mount Fuji twice in the space of a week.
