USGS scientists were using a drone to survey a fast-moving new lava flow when they received word that a man was trapped nearby.

Footage shows jets of lava producing a massive outgassing plume that soared into the sky. It also fed a fast-moving lava channel flowing eastward across the Halema'uma'u crater floor.
