Our region’s history dates back to the Calusa Indians, who were met by Spanish explorers in the 1500s. At the tribe’s peak, it is said that there were as many as 50,000 Calusa in the region.

The complex includes several Calusa Indian shell mounds, a hand-dug canal, an interpretive center and a boardwalk through native plants the Calusa used.
