The evacuation area for the Garnet Fire, burning since Aug. 24, was expanded on Labor Day. The wildfire, in the Sierra National Forest east of Fresno, had burned 26,982 acres (42 square miles) with 12% containment by the evening of the holiday, national forest fire managers said.
The Gifford Fire in central California has burned more than 119,000 acres as of early Monday, having expanded to reach "megafire" status since it began earlier in August. Newsweek contacted U.S. Forest Service for comment via email on Monday.

Spring Valley ‘Lodge Fire’: Live evacuation updates, fire map, and videos from San Diego County
San Diego Sheriff's office shared that a fire had broken out near Jamacha Boulevard and Doubletree Road in Spring Valley.
CAL FIRE wrote on X on Friday: "California is under a heat wave, bringing hot, dry, and windy conditions, making wildfires more likely to occur and to spread fast. When temps soar, even a tiny spark can ignite disaster."
The fire has been combined with the TCU September Lightning Complex Fires, which have set a total of 12,473 acres ablaze.
