On February 14, 1969, he arrived in Vietnam and was sent to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (11 ACR). He was in charge of a battle platoon of 40 men and nine armored vehicles during his service.

Roger graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. He honorably served in the Vietnam War with the 11th ACR (Black Horse) as a Captain with the medical service corps 1967-1969.
