Mamdani is expected to win the election, according to the latest polls. Marist University's poll of 792 likely voters, conducted from October 24 to 28, had Mamdani up 16 points over his rival, Cuomo, at 48 percent to 32 percent. Sliwa was at 16 percent.

Mamdani co-sponsors the Gender Recognition Act, which would make it easier for trans and nonbinary folks to change their gender on official government documents. It would also give them the option to choose a gender-neutral marker of “X” instead of the male/female binary and options for gender-neutral parent language on birth certificates.

Cuomo and others have criticized Mamdani for appearing with Hasan Piker, who made 2019 comments that "America deserved 9/11." Mamdani has previously disavowed the comments.
