LOS ANGELES (AP) — About 200 Marines have moved into Los Angeles and will protect federal property, personnel, the commander in charge says. Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, commander of Task Force 51 who is overseeing the 4,700 troops deployed, said Friday that the Marines have finished training on civil disturbance.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom had sued Trump in an attempt to block the deployment of federal troops in the city, which Newsom has called a “serious breach of state sovereignty.”
HOW WE GOT HERE: The protests erupted after Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers on Friday carried out raids in three locations across L.A., where dozens of people were taken into custody. Newsom called the raids “chaotic federal sweeps” that aimed to fill an “arbitrary arrest quota.”
