New York City, often simply referred to as New York, is the most populous city in the United States, located at the southern tip of New York State. As a global hub, it plays a central role in finance, culture, technology, media, and international diplomacy, hosting the headquarters of the United Nations. The city is composed of five boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island—each of which is coextensive with a county. With an estimated population of over 8.25 million in 2023, it is the most densely populated major city in the U.S., covering 300.46 square miles. New York City has one of the most linguistically diverse populations in the world, with over 800 languages spoken. It also has a significant foreign-born population, with nearly 3.1 million residents born outside the U.S.
