This is a nice uphill walk that is manageable for most able bodied people and has various points along it's route to get lovely photos and videos of the city and river. First stop for my photos was a…Full review by jordanellie41

Astonishing view of the city, the bridge and the castle, but the access is very difficult. You must be prepared for a difficult, narrow and uphill path, but the view is worthwhile.Full review by fillenias

Heidelberg snuck up on us. We'd just come from Brussels, which was breathtaking, and didn't expect Heidelberg to be all that exciting. We were so wrong! From the old town to the Philosopher's Way to …Full review by Robin P

We are visiting Heidelberg in December, and we are wondering if this hike is possible in winter? We aren't strangers to winter hiking and would have suitable clothing, etc.

This is perfect for winter too. You are not far away from civilisation anytime during the hike. But what would really help is good shoes with better grip in icy conditions, extra care when coming down. Otherwise, there are railings to hold in part of the way and you would enjoy the breathtaking view of beautiful city of Heidelberg covered in snow and mist of the river! It's worth it :)

Hello, From reading reviews, it seems the walk ends by going over the old bridge and entering the city. Where does the trail begin? How long does it take to complete? Thank you, Chris

There are three main ways to and from the Philosophenweg. From east to west, these are the Hirschgasse, the Schlangenweg, and the most popular route that begins at the head of Ladenburgerstrasse in Neuenheim. The Schlangenweg starts a little over a kilometer East of the Neuenheim entrance, right opposite the Old Bridge. It is the most demanding, as it consists of steep cobblestones plus 19 flights of stairs, while the other two routes are just pavement. Another 500m to the east is the Hirschgasse, opposite the weir (Schleuse) across from Karlstor. People can bike up and down the east and west routes, which would be impossible on the Schlangenweg.
