With a depth exceeding 400 metres, it ranks as the fifth-deepest lake in Europe and the deepest lake outside of Norway; its bottom reaches 227 metres below sea level. The lake is easily recognizable due to its distinctive "Y" shape, a characteristic formed by glacial activity and the flow of the Adda River.
