We took a multiple day bike tour with Icebike and it went above and beyond our expectations. They had a variety of places to ride that work with the group's experience levels (which was diverse). Th…Full review by Amanda S

Hey folks. I'm fumbling through planning an Iceland tour for mid August 2016 for my girlfriend and I and hoped to include a couple days of mtn biking. We were going to motor home route 1 too. I'm an experienced biker, but my girlfriend just picked it up this season and has very strong legs, is pretty fearless, but has limited experience on technical stuff and won't enjoy any shear cliff drop offs on both sides of single track. So here goes a litany of questions. 1. I was thinking of flying my Pivot 29'r and her Santa Cruz Blur over, packing them in the motor home and trying to find trail heads that we could drive to with a local map that didn't require 4wd. Is that a fictional dream or is it feasible? The reason why we wouldn't invest up front in a fabulous tour is that she may balk after a 1st ride and not enjoy it then I'm out a lot of dosh. 2. Are there some can't miss trails to take that are accessible by motor home to the trail head that give those epic green, scenic views and aren't too technical? She rides single track, just not shear rock click technical stuff. We could drop off route 1 anywhere, so not just Reykjavik area. 3. How brutal is the weather on the trails in mid August? How clearly are the trails marked or do they disappear often into wilderness? 4. What would be a good bike rental shop there if transporting is a foolish idea? Thanks everyone! The pics looks amazing and I hope we can experience something similar.

Hey there, I'll take a swing at your questions: 1) I think you could totally go your own way, but you'll miss a lot/most of the good trails out there. So much of what is good that we saw in Iceland was in the highlands - areas inaccessible without a "superjeep." Ultimately, Iceland is not a place with "mountain bike trails." It's got hiking trails you can ride on. Many are not on maps. Most are not on Strava or any bike related sites. Guides are helpful because they really know what is doable and what isn't. 2) I think Skogafoss could be done off Rte 1 and is probably the highest density waterfalls to km ride you could do in Iceland. It's a lot of climbing (dirt road) on a bike, but the downhill payback is awesome. There is also a trail near Reykjavik called "the Edge" which could be easily driven to. 3) I'm from Boulder, so I think we're probably speaking the same language about weather. We were in Iceland for 2 weeks. We saw temps about 60 deg F on one day. We had two "mostly sunny" days. It's generally cold, drizzly, and windy. If you dress for that, you'll be fine. I was almost never cold, but I wore a lot of wool. As previously mentioned, trails are all "wilderness" in Iceland. Not many signs. 4) There were a couple folks on our tour that rented bikes. They were pretty darn nice bikes - not a Pivot - but nice. I would suggest thinking about a one or two day guided trip and leave it to the pros. You could easily talk with Icebike or one of the other companies and find one that can work with you and your gf. Rent bikes through them for your rides and have a great time. The rest of the trip, hike. Oh, one more thing. Consider knee pads mandatory equipment. Lava is sharp.
